Eco-contribution and Triman: what must an online shop do?

As soon as you place packaged products on the French market, you are a producer under extended producer responsibility. Selling online exempts you from nothing — marketplaces are now co-responsible for their sellers.

Short answer

  1. Every producer covered by an EPR scheme must join a compliance organisation and pay an eco-contribution.
  2. ADEME then issues a unique identifier, to be kept and shared on request.
  3. The sorting label required by article L541-9-3 of the Environment Code must appear on the product or its packaging.
  4. Packaging, textiles, furniture, electrical equipment and batteries fall under separate schemes.
  5. A marketplace must check its sellers’ unique identifier before an offer goes live.

Steps to compliance

  1. Identify which schemes cover your products: packaging, textiles, furniture, electrical equipment, batteries.
  2. Join the compliance organisation for each scheme and declare the quantities placed on the market.
  3. Obtain the unique identifier issued by ADEME and keep it in your commercial records.
  4. Apply the sorting label to the relevant products and packaging.
  5. Follow the European packaging framework, which harmonises labelling from August 2026.

A real example

Example: a cosmetics shop sells bottles shipped in cardboard. Two flows apply: household packaging for the bottle and for the shipping box. You must join, declare annual tonnage and show the sorting information. The eco-contribution depends on weight and material, not on turnover.

Common mistakes

  • Believing online-only selling escapes EPR: what matters is placing goods on the market.
  • Forgetting the shipping box, which is packaging just like the product’s own.
  • Declaring one scheme when the catalogue involves several.
  • Selling on a marketplace without a unique identifier, which can get listings pulled.

How 4shopy helps

  • Each product page has a dedicated field for sorting information and environmental notices.
  • The unique identifier can be published in the legal notices, where an inspection looks for it.
  • Product weight and material are exportable attributes, useful for the annual declaration.
  • Marketplace mode lets you make the identifier mandatory in the seller profile.
